If you are investing for old age retirement or your child’s university education, you have several choices. You have the options to easily invest in ways that are safe and less risky and at the same time can give you a reasonable return over a long period of time. Investing in stock markets can be risky if you have not research the stocks before investing.

Consider mutual funds where the risks and returns are in between stocks and bonds. A mutual fund is a combination of stocks and bonds. You can buy mutual funds through a qualified broker and it is quiet easy to invest. Typically, mutual funds are a riskier than bonds and less risky than stocks.

Bonds is one of the safest options. They are issued by the Government. The returns from bonds are low, however over a long period of time your money may double using the law of compound interest.

Stocks is relatively safe if you invest in blue chip companies that have a good track record and are stable such Microsoft, and stable industry such as the banks.

Before investing your money for the long term gain, make sure you do your research first, Choose bonds only if you are very risk-averse but the returns are not as high as stocks and mutual funds although is the safest form of investments. Mutual funds will make good investments if you do not have specialised knowledge in the stock market. the funds manger will choose the stocks to invest your mony for you and the returns are pretty decent. If you think you know the stock market well, you may invest part of your investment portfolio but not all. it probably offers youthe highest returns but at the same time is the most risky compare to bonds and mutual funds.
